Bilan énergétique de l'huître creuse (Crassostrea gigas) durant la période de forte croissance en mai en Baie de Marennes-Oléron (France) ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe.
Ecophysiological study was conducted on the japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in Marennes-Oléron bay (France), during May 1992. Most of the somatic growth of the oyster occured during that month. The measurements were achieved from a removable laboratory stated in Le Chapus for 3 days at different tide level (coefficient of 49, 57, and 88). The food conditions were monitored through a computer with a continuous record of the turbidity during aIl the tidal cycle. In spite of an important variation between the food conditions in mean seston load, from 13,5 to 54,6 mg/!, the available organic matter ranged from 3 to 4,9 mg/l. The rate of organic matter in the water ranged 22 % to 9 %. The organic selection efficiency was significantly higher for the...

Evalution du bilan énergétique de l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, en baie de Marennes-Oléron (France) ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Goulletquer, Philippe; Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe.
This ecophysiological study was conducted on the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in Marennes-Oléron bay (France), in May 1992. Measurements were achieved using natural food conditions on three different days (a, b, c) at different tide levels (coefficient of 49, 57, and 88). Total particulate matter was continuously monitored with a micro-computer and a turbidimeter probe. The "consumption" function was calculated using a new formula allowing for particulate leakage prior to the pre-ingestive particle sorting. This particle leakage represents a passive loss of particles flowing through the branchial filter. Comparisons of the consumption and absorption rates of organic matter and chlorophyll a showed significant differences between seston...

Genotypic stabilization of agronomic traits in Panicum maximum (Jacq.) hybrids R. Bras. Zootec.
Braz,Thiago Gomes dos Santos; Fonseca,Dilermando Miranda da; Jank,Liana; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Martuscello,Janaina Azevedo.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the genotypic stability of agronomic traits in hybrids of Panicum maximum. Hybrids originating from the crosses between two sexual parents and cultivars Mombasa and Tanzania were evaluated in an incomplete-block design. Evaluated traits were total dry matter, leaf dry matter, stem dry matter, percentage of leaves, and leaf:stem ratio. These traits were evaluated in six harvests. Overall, higher repeatability was observed for the traits total dry matter and leaf dry matter, especially when harvests 4, 5, and 6, occurring in spring and summer, were evaluated. The leaf dry matter was the trait that provided the greatest repeatability and determination. The repeatability of stem dry matter, percentage of leaves, and...

Novel observations underlying the fast growth of suspension-feeding shellfish in turbid environments: Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Hawkins, Ajs; Smith, Rfm; Bayne, Bl; Heral, Maurice.
For the tirst time for any benthic filter-feeder, this study documents each component process of nutrient acquisition through natural tidal variations of food availabillty. The organic content of seston available during both neap and spring tides in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. France, decreased from 28 to 8 % with mcreasing seston concentration from 10 to about 90 mg total particulate mass 1(1). Throughout this tidal variation, the blue mussel Mylilus edulis L. cleared more water of particles as seston availability increased. Rejection of fillered material as pseudofaeces prior to ingestion remained a constant fraction of about 0 .93 x the mass of filtered material, so that ingestion rate showed no signs of stabilising at even the highest food...

Repeatability, number of harvests, and phenotypic stability of dry matter yield and quality traits of Panicum maximum jacq. Animal Sciences
Fernandes, Francisco Duarte; Braga, Gustavo José; Ramos, Allan Kardec Braga; Jank, Liana; Carvalho, Marcelo Ayres; Maciel, Giovana Alcântara; Karia, Claudio Takao; Fonseca, Carlos Eduardo Lazarini.
Selection of superior forage genotypes is based on agronomic traits assayed in repeated measures. The questions are how repeatable the performance of individual genotypes is and how many harvests are needed to select the best genotypes. The objectives were to estimate repeatability coefficients of dry matter yield (DMY) and forage quality, their phenotypic stability and the number of harvests needed for an accurate selection. Two randomized complete block design experiments data with 24 genotypes each, undergoing 12 and 16 harvests, over a period of 2 and 3 years, respectively, were used. The DMY repeatability estimates ranged from 0.42 to 0.55, suggesting a low heritability. The mean numbers of repeated measures were 5 and 7 harvests for 0.80 and 0.85...

Repeatability of biometric and fruit and seed yield traits of sacha inchi Acta Amazonica
VALENTE,Mágno Sávio Ferreira; LOPES,Maria Teresa Gomes; CHAVES,Francisco Célio Maia; OLIVEIRA,Ariane Mendes; FREITAS,Diego Rodrigo Bilby de.
ABSTRACT Repeatability allows an estimation of the number of evaluations needed to optimize the selection of superior genotypes, with consequent effects on the research costs in terms of financial and human resources. The objective of this study was to estimate the coefficient of repeatability of biometric and yield traits, related to fruits and seeds of sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis), and to define the number of evaluations required for an efficient selection and evaluation of genotypes of the species. A total of 37 non-domesticated accessions were evaluated for 19 months in a randomized block design with 5 replications and 2 plants per plot. The total number of fruits, total number of seeds, total fruit weight, mean fruit weight, and number of seeds...

Repeatability of fruit traits from two Hancornia speciosa populations from the core region of the Brazilian Cerrado PAB
Fonseca,Carlos Eduardo Lazarini da; Morais,Fernanda Monteiro de; Gonçalves,Helenice Moura; Aquino,Fabiana de Gois; Rocha,Fernando Souza.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the repeatability coefficients of mangaba (Hancornia speciosa) fruit traits, in order to define the number of fruit needed for an accurate selection of superior genotypes, as well as to conjecture about the nature of the phenotypic variation of these traits. Evaluations were performed for 160 fruit of 16 genotypes from two native H. speciosa populations of Goiás Velho and Padre Bernardo, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Repeatability was estimated by the analysis of variance, principal component analyses based on covariance and on the correlation matrix, and structural analysis based on the correlation matrix. Repeatability estimates for fruit weight, diameter, and length, as well as seed number and...

Test-day milk yield as a selection criterion for dairy buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis Artiodactyla, Bovidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tonhati,Humberto; Cerón-Muñoz,Mário Fernando; Oliveira,João Ademir de; El Faro,Lenira; Lima,André Luís Ferreira; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de.
Due to the great demand for buffalo milk by-products the interest in technical-scientific information about this species is increasing. Our objective was to propose selection criteria for milk yield in buffaloes based on total milk yield, 305-day milk yield (M305), and test-day milk yield. A total of 3,888 lactations from 1,630 Murrah (Bubalus bubalis) cows recorded between 1987 and 2001, from 10 herds in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed. Covariance components were obtained using the restricted maximum likelihood method applied to a bivariate animal model. Additive genetic and permanent environmental effects were considered as random, and contemporary group and lactation order as fixed effects. The heritability estimates were 0.22 for total...
